Why Is My Bottomless Portafilter Spraying?

Why Is My Bottomless Portafilter Spraying?

Pulling a shot with a bottomless portafilter is equal parts satisfying and brutal honesty. When it’s good, it’s great. When it’s messy? You’ve got espresso spraying everywhere and a million questions.

So, why is your bottomless portafilter splashing? Let’s break it down.

What Causes the Splash?

A bottomless portafilter (also called a naked portafilter) has no spouts to hide behind. That’s what makes it such a valuable tool, but also why it can look chaotic when things aren’t quite dialled in.

If your espresso is spraying, channeling, or dripping unevenly, it’s usually down to one of these:

1. Grind Size Is Too Coarse

When your grind is too coarse, water flows through too quickly and doesn’t extract evenly. This leads to weak spots in the puck and creates sprays or jets of espresso instead of a smooth stream.

Fix it: Try grinding a little finer and see how it changes the flow.

2. Uneven Distribution of Coffee Grounds

If your coffee bed isn’t level, water will find the path of least resistance—causing channeling and unpredictable spurts from the portafilter.

Fix it: Use a coffee distributor or a WDT tool (Weiss Distribution Technique) to break up clumps and level out the coffee bed before tamping.

3. Tamping Technique

An uneven or too-light tamp can lead to inconsistent pressure across the puck, and again, result in channeling and splashing.

Fix it: Apply firm, even pressure when tamping. A self-leveling tamper can help take the guesswork out of this step.

4. Under or Overdosing

If you're using too much or too little coffee, your puck might not have enough resistance—or it may be too dense. Both scenarios can lead to a messy extraction.

Fix it: Measure your dose using a coffee scale. Most baskets work best with doses around 18–20g, but it depends on your machine and basket style.

5. Worn or Incompatible Basket

Not all baskets are created equal. Some stock baskets have inconsistent holes or sizing, especially on entry-level machines. This can impact extraction quality and cause spraying.

Fix it: Consider upgrading your portafilter basket for more even flow and extracion control.

Should You Worry About Splashing?

Not at all—at first. Splashes, sprays, and weird drips are totally normal when you’re new to bottomless. The good news? Every messy shot is a chance to learn and improve.

With some small tweaks to your grind, distribution, and tamping routine, you’ll soon be watching beautiful, syrupy shots pour cleanly into your cup.

Bottom Line

Bottomless portafilters are brutally honest—but that’s what makes them great. They expose flaws in your technique so you can improve. Splashing? It’s just your espresso telling you what to fix.
