The right 54mm portafilter for your Breville espresso machine
Your portafilter is the handle at the heart of every shot: it holds the basket, locks into the group head and channels your espresso into the cup. Upgrading it is one of the most satisfying changes a home barista can make, adding better feel, better looks and, with a bottomless design, a clear window into how your coffee is really extracting. Every Hypergrind 54mm portafilter is built specifically for Breville and Sage machines, so it locks in with a secure, factory-style fit.
Bottomless vs twin spout: which is right for you?
A bottomless (naked) portafilter removes the spout entirely, exposing the base of the basket so you can watch the extraction as it happens. It is the fastest way to see channelling, uneven tamping or grind problems, making it the tool of choice for baristas dialling in their technique. A twin spout portafilter splits the flow into two neat streams, ideal for pulling two cups at once and for a clean, classic pour. If you want to improve your shots and enjoy the theatre of a live extraction, go bottomless; if you value convenience and pulling two cups at a time, choose a twin spout.
Built for Breville and Sage 54mm machines
These portafilters are made for the 54mm, three-ear group head used across the Breville and Sage range, including the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino, Bambino Plus, the Infuser and the Duo Temp Pro. Because they are engineered to the same three-ear pattern as the original, they seat and seal just like your factory portafilter, with no adapters or modifications needed.
Choose your finish and handle
Match your setup with a handle to suit your bench. Our timber options come in warm Rosewood, deep Blackwood and light Beechwood, alongside a bold all-black finish, each paired with a durable stainless steel and alloy body. Bottomless models are available with a classic straight handle or a low-profile ergonomic handle for extra comfort in the hand. Whichever you choose, you are getting a tool that looks as good on the bench as it performs in the group head.
Complete the upgrade
A bottomless portafilter shows you everything, so it pairs perfectly with the tools that help you nail your prep: a precision basket for even flow, a WDT tool and distributor to level the bed, and a good tamp. Want it all in one go? Our Black & Gold Bottomless Precision Kit and Signature Black & Gold Kit pair a Breville 54mm portafilter with a matching precision basket and prep tools.

Breville 54mm portafilter FAQs
What does a portafilter do?
The portafilter is the handled device that holds your coffee basket and locks into your machine's group head. Water is forced through the coffee inside it under pressure to brew espresso, and its spout (or lack of one) directs the shot into your cup. It's the tool you dose, distribute and tamp in before every shot.
Which Breville and Sage machines use a 54mm portafilter?
The 54mm size fits most Breville and Sage home machines, including the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino, Bambino Plus, the Infuser and the Duo Temp Pro. They use a distinctive three-ear group head. If your machine is one of these, a 54mm portafilter is the correct fit.
What's the difference between a bottomless and a spouted portafilter?
A spouted (or twin spout) portafilter has a spout underneath that channels espresso into one or two streams and hides the base of the basket. A bottomless, or naked, portafilter removes the spout entirely, leaving the basket exposed so you can watch the extraction directly and spot any issues as they happen.
Should I choose a bottomless or twin spout portafilter?
Choose a bottomless portafilter if you want to improve your technique and see channelling or uneven extraction in real time. Choose a twin spout if you value convenience, a clean classic pour and the ability to fill two cups at once. Many baristas own both and switch depending on the day.
Will a 54mm portafilter fit my Breville machine?
Yes, as long as your machine uses the 54mm three-ear group head, which covers the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo Temp Pro. Our portafilters are built to the same three-ear pattern as the original, so they seat and seal without adapters or modifications.
What are the benefits of a bottomless portafilter?
A bottomless portafilter gives instant visual feedback on your shot. Because the basket is exposed, you can see channelling, uneven tamping and grind issues immediately, which makes it a powerful tool for refining puck prep and pulling more consistent, better-tasting espresso. Many baristas also love the look of a live, spout-free extraction.
Are bottomless portafilters harder to use?
They're a little less forgiving because there's no spout to hide mistakes: poor distribution or an uneven tamp can cause spraying. The good news is this feedback is exactly what helps you improve. Using a WDT tool and tamping evenly solves it quickly, and most baristas adapt within a few shots.
What's the difference between a straight and an ergonomic handle?
A straight handle is the classic, in-line style that sits level with the portafilter. An ergonomic handle has a lower, contoured profile designed to sit more naturally in your hand and give a comfortable grip while you dose and tamp. Both lock into your machine identically; the choice is about feel and looks.
Do I need a special basket, and will my existing basket fit?
No special basket is required and all of our portafilters come complete with a double shot basket as pictured. Your machine's standard 54mm basket will also drop straight into these portafilters, and you can also fit an upgraded precision basket for more even extraction. With a bottomless portafilter in particular, a good basket makes the even flow easy to see and enjoy.
How much coffee should a 54mm basket hold?
A standard 54mm double basket typically holds around 18 to 20g of coffee, while a single holds roughly 7 to 9g. Aim for a 1:2 ratio (for example 18g in to about 36g out) over roughly 25 to 30 seconds, then adjust your grind and dose to taste.
Can I use a precision basket in these portafilters?
Absolutely. A 54mm precision basket fits straight into our bottomless and twin spout portafilters and is a popular upgrade, delivering more even water flow for a more balanced shot. A precision basket and a bottomless portafilter are a natural pairing, since you can see the improved extraction directly.
How do I clean and maintain my portafilter?
Knock out the puck and rinse the portafilter and basket after use, drying the timber handle rather than soaking it to protect the finish. Periodically remove the basket and clean built-up coffee oils from the portafilter and spout with warm water and a soft brush, using espresso detergent for a deeper clean when needed. Do not place the portafilter or the basket inside the dishwasher.
