Twin spouts and bottomless portafilters options
A bottomless portafilter exposes the basket so you can see the espresso flow as it happens. This makes it easy to spot uneven pours, refine your grind size, or adjust tamping technique.
Many of our customers use bottomless portafilters as a learning tool. They’re perfect if you want to:
- Practise barista skills with instant visual feedback
- Train for consistent extractions at home
- Improve crema and flavour in every shot
On the other hand, a twin spout portafilter splits espresso evenly into two cups, making it practical and efficient. For busy households or everyday routines, twin spout portafilters keep brewing simple.
This style works best when you:
- Brew for more than one person each morning
- Prefer a tidy workflow with minimal splatter
- Switch between single and double baskets depending on the day
If you’re unsure which size you need, our portafilter size guide makes choosing easy.

FAQs
What is the portafilter?
A portafilter is the handle and basket we use to hold ground coffee in our espresso machine. It locks into the group head and allows pressurised water to flow through and brew espresso. Without it, you can’t create the pressure and stability needed for a proper shot.
What is the difference between a portafilter and a basket?
The portafilter for coffee machines refers to the handle and frame, while the basket is the removable insert we use to hold the ground coffee. The basket determines the shot size and can be swapped between single and double. Having a spare basket is useful for flexibility when you’re switching between short and long coffees.
Why is it called a portafilter?
It comes from Italian: “porta” meaning “to carry” and “filtro” meaning “filter.” Together, it means “filter holder,” which describes its role in the espresso process.
Is it bad to leave coffee in the portafilter?
Yes. Leaving spent grounds in the portafilter causes oils to go rancid and affects flavour. We always knock out the puck and rinse the basket straight after brewing.
How to care for a portafilter?
We recommend rinsing after each use and giving your portafilter a regular clean with a food-safe espresso cleaner. Handles should be wiped with a damp cloth rather than soaked, which helps them stay in good condition for longer.
